9^th Jan 2012: Coleraine Borough Council Welcomes Announcement To Bring Irish Open To The Borough In 2012

Mayor of Coleraine, Alderman Maurice Bradley, congratulates the European Tour, Royal Portrush Golf Club and all those involved in achieving the decision to bring the Irish Open to Portrush in June this year. Mayor Bradley said “Many congratulations to the Club, the European Tour and all those involved in bringing the Irish Open to Portrush. It is fantastic news for the North Coast. As a Council we will work with the Club and the organizers to give whatever support we can to help make the event a great success, we are extremely proud and excited about it coming to the Borough”.

Mayor Bradley continued, “This is truly a historical occasion, to bring this tournament back to the area and I personally thank all those who have had a part to play in this decision. As a Council we recognize golf as a tremendous asset for our area and Royal Portrush is the jewel in the crown. The success of our local major winners has taken the interest in Northern Ireland golf to a whole new level; the prospect of an Irish Open event will lift this even further.   

“It is great credit to both governments, north and south, that the Irish Open is to be played in Portrush this year. Thanks to Minister Foster and those in the Northern Ireland Executive for their support with funding – this is an essential stimulus for the event to take place and is truly welcome.

“Our local golfing stars have really put their weight behind this event and they too deserve the utmost recognition for their efforts and for their personal achievements. The Irish Open will promote the North Coast on a world wide stage, it will help boost our local economy and support our businesses to grow during a difficult economic climate.
