It was Friday 22nd February 2008 at 10:00am when reality hit me, I had just taken over Bayview Hotel in Portballintrae, it was the time of recession, and it was sink or swim!!
Being a native of Bushmills and Portballintrae, I was excited about the prospect of propelling Bayview into the future and to the forefront of Hospitality throughout Ireland and the World, little did I know that I would have to sacrifice and dedicate so much of my life to ensure that we stayed afloat.
From initially 12 employees we have created employment for 42 loyal staff who work diligently to ensure that our Accomodation guests and diners have a fantastic time when visiting Bayview. Guests enjoy proper ‘cooked to order’ breakfasts, wonderful lunches and evening meals prepared by our experienced team of chefs.
The Restaurant has a wonderful view over the bay as do 15 of our beautiful North facing rooms, on a good day you can see the island of Islay and to the west County Donegal. The south facing rooms have panoramic views over the countryside of Bushmills and beyond.
Over the past ten years we have welcomed many guests from all parts of the world, lots of our guests love to return a number to times each year for short reviving breaks and relaxation, especially in front of our open peat and log fire.
We've had some super stars visit us, such as Darren Clarke, what a time we had when Darren won The Open Golf Tournament at Royal St Georges in 2011, he brought the famous Claret Jug to Bayview for all to see and have pictures taken with it, the publicity was amazing. A number of actors from Game of Thrones have also stayed when filming in the area, they love the buzz and homely atmosphere of the Porthole Bar and the fantastic views from the restaurant and lounge.
Bayview has supported the Portballintrae Residents Association, funding many of the Halloween FireWorks displays over the bay, this event always attracts large numbers of visitors and locals to the village. A few of the other great events which Bayview sponsors are, Armoy Road Races, NorthWest 200, Dunluce Bowling Club, the Junior Team at Coleraine Football Club, Bushfoot Golf Club and a Ladies golf event at Royal Portrush Golf Club.
We are looking forward to the Open Golf Championship in 2019 at Royal Portrush Golf Club and welcoming the organisers, Royal and Ancient Golf who have reserved Bayview for that week.
I am extremely grateful for the support we have had over the past 10 years, from locals and visitors, we hope to improve Bayview even more over the next number of years and have plans to extend the Hotel with the addition of a small function room and extra bedrooms.
Portballintrae is a fantastic little village with lovely beaches, pools, harbour and coastal walkways, it would be very empty and lost without Bayview.
I love to welcome our guests and introduce them to the wonders of the Causeway coast and Bushmills so that they leave with wonderful impressions and memories of our great wee place!
I love our business and hopefully I will have many more enjoyable years at the helm, nurturing and looking after Bayview.
