Gowlands Offers Support to Local Ratepayers Ahead of Reval 2023
Published on:January 11, 2023

Business rates are a considerable burden for any business, and reducing this cost can drive down overheads, help sustain business in challenging economic conditions and support growth.

Gowlands is a family-run local firm of chartered surveyors operated by husband-and-wife team John and Fallon Gowland.  They support ratepayers through their independent consultancy service dedicated to identifying and securing potential business rates savings, by reviewing the property’s rateable value and challenging this with Land and Property Services.  To date, Gowlands has secured its clients over £8 million of business rates savings through rateable value reductions, reliefs and exemptions, across a diverse range of sectors, from sole traders to multinationals.

With less than three months remaining on the current 2020 Valuation List, there are some key points for Business Ratepayers to be aware of:

  • The 2020 Valuation List commenced 1st April 2020 and closes on 31st March 2023. A successful challenge could secure your business up to 3 years of refunds.
  • The deadline for registering a challenge to secure refunds on the 2020 Valuation List is 31st March 2023, with no further opportunity to submit a fresh challenge after this date.
  • A draft Valuation List for Reval 2023 is due to be published imminently. Every ratepayer will have an opportunity to review this and is encouraged to challenge the basis with Land and Property Services.
  • 1st April 2023 will bring in a General Revaluation in Northern Ireland known as Reval 2023, creating a new rates liability for all ratepayers.

John Gowland, Head of Rating, says, “We are proud of the savings we have achieved for many local business ratepayers over the past three General Revaluations.  With many businesses feeling the strain from the “cost of doing business crisis”, our service is crucial to supporting them during these challenging economic times, and we look forward to continuing to support ratepayers through Reval 2023 and beyond.”
